Securing Bestway Wholesale’s Coventry Depot with a Complete Access Control Solution

As the UK’s largest independent food and drink wholesaler, Bestway Wholesale runs a busy distribution operation with a steady flow of vehicles entering and exiting the site. Our focus was on delivering an access solution capable of withstanding constant use, while keeping traffic moving efficiently and without delay.

Project Overview

Working closely with the client, PSL Ltd designed and delivered a complete perimeter and access solution. After initial site visits, surveys and approvals, the project was completed over 7 days, ensuring minimal disruption to the depot’s ongoing operations.

Our scope of work included:

• Installation of high-security palisade fencing

• Deployment of FAAC B680 automatic vehicle barriers

• Relocation of security huts for controlled access

• Site signage outlining access arrangements

• Integration of access control systems within the security huts

Each element was carefully selected to create a cohesive and robust security infrastructure.

Robust Perimeter Protection

To secure the site boundary, we installed palisade fencing, a proven solution for industrial and commercial environments.

Palisade fencing is known for its strength, durability, and strong visual deterrent. Manufactured from steel and available in a range of finishes, it provides long-term protection while requiring minimal maintenance. This made it an ideal choice for a busy distribution depot like Bestway Wholesale.

High-Performance Vehicle Barriers

A key part of the project was managing vehicle flow safely and efficiently. For this, we installed FAAC B680 automatic barriers, specifically designed for high-traffic sites such as warehouses and distribution centres.

The FAAC B680 offers:

• Coverage for entrances up to 8 metres wide

• Reliable performance for continuous, heavy use

• Integrated safety features, including obstacle detection

• For Bestway we added the traffic light systems for clear driver guidance

This makes it an excellent solution for environments where both security and fast throughput are critical.

Access Control & Safety Features

To further enhance site security, we implemented access control systems operated from the on-site security huts. This allows for controlled entry and exit, ensuring only authorised vehicles can access the premises.

For vehicles exiting the site, we installed above-ground vehicle detection sensors. Unlike induction loop systems that rely on metal detection, these sensors use a combination of microwave and ultrasonic technology to accurately detect vehicle presence. This approach is particularly beneficial where groundworks are not suitable, offering flexibility without compromising performance.

Clear signage was also installed across the site, ensuring drivers and pedestrians understand access routes and procedures, helping to maintain safe and efficient traffic flow.
